Prior to this clash, never before had a total of 200+ been chased at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. Despite being a high-scoring venue, never has a team managed to get a 200+ run chase going before today. Rajasthan Royals opted to bat first without batting an eyelid, and that seemingly looked like the right decision for the longest time.
Yashasvi Jaiswal carried on his purple patch, with his first IPL century, after scoring a 77 against Chennai Super Kings. What was more astonishing was the fact that out of the 212 runs on the night, Jaiswal had scored 124, which came off just 62 deliveries, with 16 boundaries and eight sixes.
Mumbai were on course at one point but later on, had a slip-up. At that point, the ask was 57 runs off the last four overs. And then, Tim David happened. According to Sanju Samson, it was the 14-ball 45 from David that changed the complexion of the encounter.
“David did something special. (On the dew) It was kinda wet, not that wet, we were expecting it but had the experience to deal with it,” Samson said.
Samson also credited Jaiswal, stating that it was quite a knock. Nevertheless, Samson was happy with the team’s performance and insisted that it shows their ‘high standards’ in the tournament.
“The way we've been playing, with the last nine games ending with us winning or coming close, illustrates the high standards at which we've been playing. Jaiswal ended up on the wrong side but very happy for him personally.”
On the other hand, Tim David, the match-winner stated that his aim on the night was only to clear the ground and cut the different angles for the bowlers.
“We needed a result. It is an amazing feeling, there's no better feeling than playing at the Wankhede. For our confidence.. We have not played our best cricket in the last few games, so this feels good,” David stated.
“It was sweaty, I was trying to get down the pitch and cut the angle. Any time the bowlers missed the yorker then you were in with a chance.”
