Sanju Samson fined for showing dissent following dismissal against DC

The RR skipper was fined 30% of his match fee after he was adjudged out, following a controversial catch in the deep

Rajasthan Royals (RR) captain Sanju Samson has been fined 30% of his match fee for breaching the Indian Premier League (IPL) Code of Conduct in the match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on May 7 (Tuesday) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi. It was a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the code of conduct, which pertains to showing dissent to an umpire's decision.

Samson admitted the offence imposed on him and also the consequences of it.

In the 16th over of the chase, Samson was caught at long-on by Shai Hope. While there was no doubt of Hope taking the catch, the question was whether he had touched the boundary ropes or not. Based on the replays, third umpire Michael Gough had no conclusive evidence of Hope touching the boundary cushions with his feet, and as a result, Samson was given out.

That did not go down well with Samson, who charged towards the umpires - KN Ananthapadmanabhan and Ulhas Gandhe - and had a prolonged chat with them. Samson's dismissal for a 46-ball 86 proved to be pivotal as RR eventually fell short by 20 runs in pursuit of 222.

RR director of cricket Kumar Sangakkara, while sympathising with the umpires, said that his team had a different view on it.

“It depends on replays and angles. Sometimes, you think the foot has touched. It was a difficult one for the third umpire to judge; the game was at a crucial stage, but it happened," Sangakkara said at the post-match press conference.

"We have different perspectives, but at the end of the day, you have to stand by the decision the third umpire has made, even if we have a different opinion on it."

DC assistant coach Pravin Amre, however, lauded Hope for taking a brilliant catch at a crucial juncture in the game.

“We have to give credit to the way Hope judged the catch and balanced himself. And umpires are there, and they have so much technology. The umpire’s decision is final. It wasn’t an easy catch. He anticipated that very well," Amre said.

With this win, DC moved to fifth in the points table with 12 points from 11 matches and still remain in the hunt for a place in the playoffs. RR remain in second place, and already have one foot in the next round, having accumulated 16 points from 11 games.
