Saud Shakeel becomes joint-fastest Pakistani to 1000 Test runs

The Karachi batter equalled the record of Saeed Ahmed, who played for Pakistan between 1958-73

Saud Shakeel earned himself a marvellous record while he was in the middle of resurrecting Pakistan’s batting innings after the hosts were jolted with three early scalps.

He equalled the record of Saeed Ahmed and became the joint-fastest Pakistani to 1000 Test runs, getting to the feat in just 20 innings. Ahmed achieved the feat way back in 1959 in a Test in Karachi against Australia.

Shakeel came into bat when Pakistan were in serious trouble, with three wickets down and just 16 runs on the board. He soaked in the pressure and batted astutely along with Saim Ayub, his fellow batter from Karachi who had already scored a half-century in the Test.

At the time of writing this report, Shakeel was batting on 42* in 64 deliveries, having scored four boundaries in his innings. He wasn't troubled at all, and was busy at the crease.

Earlier, Bangladesh won the toss and chose to bowl first on a track that was helpful for the pacers and the seamers Shoriful Islam and Hasan Mahmud bowled tight and accurate lines to suffocate the Pakistani batters.

While Mahmud bowled a full delivery and sucked Abdullah Shafique into playing an expansive drive, skipper Shan Masood departed after a contentious caught behind call against Shoriful. Pakistan were dented even further when Babar Azam fiddled with a stray delivery down the leg side and Litton Das grabbed a spectacular catch diving to his left.
