Say Bye to Cheap IPL Tickets, Tax Rate Goes Up From 28 to 40 per cent

The Government of India has raised the GST for IPL matches to 40%, making tickets more expensive

Say bye to cheap Indian Premier League (IPL) tickets, as the Government of India has raised the goods and services tax (GST) to 40% from 28%, on September 4 (Thursday). IPL tickets that used to cost INR 1280 (1000+280) will now cost INR 1400 (1000+400).

The new ruling means IPL tickets have been put in the same bracket as numerous other luxury items, like casinos, race clubs or any place that has these two. However, there’s no clarity whether the franchises (who set the price for tickets) will increase their prices over the new ruling or will retain the same prices.

On the other hand, multiple reports suggested that the government has reduced the GST on international fixtures. However, according to ESPNCricinfo, there’s no clarity over it, but it added that international fixtures could only attract 18% GST, which makes it a much cheaper viewing than the IPL.

Not just that, according to the current GST laws, there’s no GST for match tickets below INR 500. ESPNCricinfo also confirmed that these changes will go live before the Women’s ODI World Cup, which will take place in various parts of India and Sri Lanka. In that case, the match tickets for these events will only attract an 18% GST.
