Follow UsAustralia have announced their squad for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in India, with Pat Cummins leading the side. Even though Nathan Ellis was in contention for a spot, Sean Abbott’s batting abilities propelled him to the side. Apart from Ellis, Aaron Hardie and Tanveer Sangha have been delisted from the provisional 18-member squad.
Even though Australia are currently facing multiple injury concerns, Cricket Australia are confident that Pat Cummins, Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, and Glenn Maxwell will regain full fitness ahead of the mega event in India next month. Tim David, Marnus Labuschagne and Spencer Johnson, who are currently with the ODI squad in South Africa, haven’t been picked in the 15-member squad for the tour.
"All are well placed to come back online in the coming weeks and potentially for selection in the upcoming series against India," Cricket Australia’s selection chief George Bailey said.
"There are eight one-day matches still to play in South Africa and India before the final squad is due to be declared. They are followed by two World Cup practice games, which offers plenty of opportunity to continue the build for the tournament."
Australia have picked three spin options in the form of Ashton Agar, Glenn Maxwell, and Adam Zampa. Even though Tanveer Sangha was impressive in his approach and did well in the limited opportunities, with the squad size limited to 15, there was no place for him.
As a matter of fact, Australia could make changes to their squad till September 28, then they can assess the fitness concerns of their players. The five-time champions start their World Cup campaign on October 8.
