'Selectors don’t see Bhuvneshwar hungry for 10 overs, forget Test cricket'

The India fast bowler last played a Test for India in 2018

India fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar was not picked for the World Test Championship (WTC) final and also for the subsequent five-match Test series against England. According to reports, it is learnt that Bhuvneshwar does not want to play Test cricket anymore.

India already have the likes of Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Siraj and also Shardul Thakur to pick from in their fast bowling department.

However, given that India are set to play their next six Tests in England, Bhuvneshwar with his swing could have been handy in those conditions. The selectors do not see Bhuvi hungry enough to bowl 10 overs in an ODI, let alone Tests.

"Those who have seen him from close insist he brought in a huge change in his work-drills a couple of seasons ago, doing away with heavyweight training, falling to the lure of the white-ball comfort and avoiding those hours of long spells that are so integral to red-ball cricket," a source told Times of India.

"To be honest, the selectors don’t even see Bhuvi hungry for 10 overs, forget Test cricket. It’s Team India’s loss no doubt because if one bowler should have made it to England, it should have been him."

With Ishant Sharma's fitness an issue, the responsibility will have to be borne largely by Shami and Bumrah. “Ishant has been the backbone of India’s attack, and rightly so, but when was the last time he worked his way through an entire series? Injury relapses and niggles have been a constant irritant. That will leave the bulk of the responsibility on two pacers,  Jasprit Bumrah and  Mohammed Shami,” the source further said.

India take on New Zealand in the inaugural WTC final, starting from June 18 in Southampton. That will be followed by a five-match Test series against England, beginning from August 4.
