NEWSFormer South African captain Faf du Plessis feels a Test series win against India would give Dean Elgar huge confidence going forward. The Proteas lost the first Test but bounced back in the next two encounters and won the three-match series 2-1.
Elgar led from the front, scoring 235 runs in six innings at an average of 47. The left-handed opener crafted 96* in the second Test and helped South Africa chase down 240 on a difficult Johannesburg surface.
"I think Elgar is a very good captain for South Africa now. I think what's really important is that he is really experienced and has played over 65 (72) Test matches and he knows what he is doing," du Plessis, who is currently in Dhaka to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, told Cricbuzz on Friday (January 21).
"He played under some good leaders like the experience of Graeme Smith, AB de Villiers and myself. So it gives him the opportunity of using what we did well as a team before and now just continues (doing) that.
"His experience will be very vital for the Test team now because they are a young Test team and also they have won the series against India which from a confidence point of view will be massive for him as a leader and also for the team. I am really looking forward to see what they do."
Du Plessis hasn't played for South Africa since February 2021 but has been playing in the T20 leagues all around the world.
"Playing T20s is nice. I don't have to wake up at 7 am to play a Test match. The other day I had to leave the hotel at 7 o'clock to go to practice. So I said to the guys 'I retired not to do this anymore and now you are taking me to practice early in the morning'. But it's because it's so many teams which have to practice.
"T20 is great because you play a lot of games and the tournaments are short you know, four weeks, in and out and you get to chill out."
