Shakib Al Hasan set to lead Bangladesh in Asia Cup and World Cup

Shakib was the full-time Bangladesh captain between 2009 and 2011, but then he was the deputy to Mashrafe Mortaza multiple times

After Tamim Iqbal decided not to take part in the Asia Cup 2023, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) appointed Shakib Al Hasan as the skipper for the event and the ICC World Cup 2023 as well. The selectors decided to speak to Shakib about his availability before naming him the permanent skipper.

"We have appointed Shakib as the captain for Asia Cup and World Cup. The World Cup and Asia Cup squad will be announced tomorrow. The selectors will pick a squad of 17 members," Nazmul told reporters at his house on Friday.

The drama related to Bangladesh cricket is a never-dying one. Tamim Iqbal first announced a sudden retirement from the ODIs in the wake of Asia Cup in July, but that decision then met with intervention from Bangladesh's Prime Minister, because of which Tamim decided to return. But after another injury ruled him out of the Asia Cup, he decided to resign from the captaincy.

Shakib was the full-time Bangladesh captain between 2009 and 2011, but then he was the deputy to Mashrafe Mortaza multiple times. Now his appointment as skipper has ensured that Shakib is the Bangladesh captain in all three formats of the game.

With the captaincy responsibility off him, Tamim now aims for a return in the ODI series against New Zealand that begins on September 21 with the ODI World Cup starting on October 5.
