Shakib likely to skip West Indies ODI series

The Bangladesh Test captain has been unsure of his participation in the ODIs before the team travelled to the Caribbean

Star allrounder Shakib al Hasan is likely to miss the ODI series against West Indies, Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan said on Wednesday.

Following the 2-0 Test series defeat, Bangladesh are scheduled to play three T20Is followed by the three ODIs on July 10, 13 and 16. However, the series is not part of the ICC Men's ODI World Cup Super League, which could be the reason for Shakib to opt out.

Shakib was recently reappointed as Bangladesh Test captain after Mominul Haque stepped down from the role to focus on his batting.

"Shakib said before going said that he won't play Test and will play one-day and T20. After sitting with me he said that he will play Test and later he was made the captain. I heard that he told Jalal bhai( BCB's cricket operation chairman) that he might not play in the ODI series and that he had said so earlier," Hasan told reporters.

"Because he hasn't spoken with the board officially probably I will understand it after talking to them by today or tomorrow. But you can take that as unofficial considering he had informed earlier," he added.

According to Cricbuzz, Shakib is likely to be replaced by Taijul Islam. Hasan said that the Board will welcome players' decision to miss few series which will give them a chance to test other players.

"If seniors want break from games that are not part of ICC events that that is good. We can see the new cricketers and whether we have players in their place or not. Thinking everything we have it in mind that they (seniors) need to be given break," Hasan said.

The first T20I between Bangladesh and West Indies will be played July 2 at Windsor Park, Dominica which will also host the second T20I on July 3.
