Shakib reappointed as Bangladesh's Test captain
The allrounder takes over from Mominul Haque who resigned as Bangladesh's Test captain on Monday
Shakib al Hasan has been reappointed as Bangladesh's Test captain, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced on Thursday. Shakib's appointment follows Mominul Haque's resignation from the role following the intense criticism for the team's 1-0 series against Sri Lanka at home.
Mominul, who took over Shakib in 2019 following an ICC ban on Shakib, led Bangladesh in 17 Tests with three wins, including a historic victory in New Zealand last year. During his time, Bangladesh drew two matches and suffered 12 losses.
Shakib had previously led the Test team across two stints - from 2009-11 and from 2018-19. Bangladesh lost 11 matches and won three during this time.
However, BCB president Nazmul Hasan said that the Board are weighing their options in case Shakib is not willing to play in the series against Zimbabwe which follows the West Indies tour.
"We have a series against Zimbabwe after the West Indies. He may not be there. Other than this, he gave us a commitment he would play in all formats in future series, but it's difficult to say for how long Shakib will be leading the side," Hasan told reporters.
Bangladesh are set to play two Tests in the Caribbean from June 16-28 at Antigua and St. Lucia. They will also play three ODIs and as many T20Is from July 2-16.
