Shane Dowrich retires from international cricket

Dowrich made his Test (and international) debut in 2015 against Australia and played 35 Tests for West Indies

Cricket West Indies (CWI) have announced that wicket-keeper batter Shane Dowrich, who last week was named in the squad for the three-match ODI series against England, has decided to retire from international cricket, bringing an end to an eight-year-long international career.

Dowrich has subsequently been withdrawn from the squad for the England ODIs.

“We want to thank Shane for contribution when he played for West Indies. He is a disciplined, hard-working cricketer who always gave his utmost in front and behind the stumps,” Miles Bascombe, CWI’s Director of Cricket, said.

“He had a memorable series in 2019 when he made an outstanding Test century on home soil in Barbados to help us beat England and win the Wisden Trophy. We respect his decision to retire and appreciate it is not an easy one to make.

“We wish him all the best as he steps away from the international stage.”

Dowrich made his Test (and international) debut in 2015 against Australia and played 35 Tests for West Indies. He inflicted 90 dismissals in total and averaged 29.07 with the bat. The 32-year-old famously starred in the series win over England in 2019, in which he struck an unbeaten 116 in the first Test in Bridgetown. In that very innings, he posted an unbeaten 295-run stand for the seventh wicket with then skipper Jason Holder.

The 32-year-old’s last Test appearance came against New Zealand in Hamilton three years ago.
