The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) accepted Najmul Hossain Shanto’s resignation as the country’s T20I skipper on January 2nd (Thursday), but refused to go searching for a replacement immediately as there was no upcoming shortest format international fixture for the team, said a report by Cricbuzz.
“Shanto finally told us that he won't lead in the T20Is and we accepted it but as we don't have T20Is at the moment, we have time in hand so we are not picking a new captain," a BCB official seeking anonymity said.
"If there is no injury issue Najmul will remain the captain in Test and ODIs and we have discussed it," he added.
While Litton Das led the T20I team to the first clean sweep 3-0 against West Indies in Shanto’s absence, the Bangladesh team were swept away 0-3 against the same team in the ODI leg of the tour where Mehidy Hasan Miraz stood in for Shanto. The Test series, where also the all-rounder led the team in Shanto’s absence, ended in a 1-1 draw.
Therefore, Litton might get the T20I leadership role permanently, but as of now, Shanto will only lead in the ODIs and Tests with his first assignment being the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in Pakistan.
