Shardul Thakur, who remained unsold in the Indian Premier League mega auction, suffered yet another setback in his career.
The Mumbai allrounder conceded 1/69 in his four overs against Kerala in a Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) game, which is the joint worst-ever bowling figure recorded in the history of India’s premier domestic men’s T20 competition. He equalled the infamous record of Arunachal Pradesh’s Ramesh Rahul, who also leaked 69 runs against Haryana in his four overs in the SMAT just a couple of days ago.
The record was earlier held by Hyderabad’s Pagadala Naidu, who gave 1/67 against Mumbai in 2010.
Thakur had a poor 2024 season with the Chennai Super Kings, where he picked up just five wickets in nine games at an average north of 61. With the IPL teams not relying on bowling allrounders’ batting ability due to the impact player rule, Thakur’s stocks plumetted massively.
The 33-year-old recently had surgery, which he feels is the reason why he wasn’t considered for the Indian team selection in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy (BGT). However, Indian coach Gautam Gambhir backed Nitish Kumar Reddy as the pace bowling allrounder saying that the decision was a part of “moving forward.”
Reddy performed brilliantly on debut in the Perth Test, scoring 41 in his first outing, which was the most across both the teams' first innings. He even scored a quick fire 38* off 27 alongside Virat Kohli when India were looking to declare their second innings. He proved his all-round credentials by making Mitchell Marsh chop a ball onto his stumps in Australia's second innings.
