She Beats Up Juniors A Lot: Bangladesh Captain Accused Of Slapping Teammates

The BCB have denied these allegations, stating that it has complete trust in their skipper

After yet another disappointing finish in the Women's World Cup, Bangladesh Women captain Nigar Sultana Joty finds herself in the middle of a controversy. Fast bowler Jahanara Alam, who did not play the mega event in India and Sri Lanka, has accused her captain of slapping junior players while on tours, including the recently-concluded World Cup.

Bangladesh finished seventh in the tournament, winning just their first match against Pakistan and losing five. “This is nothing new. Joty beats up the juniors a lot," Alam stated in an interview with Bangladesh daily ‘Kaler Kantho’.

“Even during this World Cup, the juniors told me, ‘No, I won’t do this again. Then I’ll have to get slapped again.’ I heard from some people, ‘I got beaten up yesterday.’ Even during the Dubai tour, she called a junior into the room and slapped her."

Alam, who recently took a mental break from the game, says the majority of the team, including her, have gone through this assault from their captain.

“Actually, I am not alone; everyone in the Bangladesh team is more or less a victim. Everyone’s suffering is different. Here, one or two people get advanced facilities and in some cases, only one person gets them," she said.

“In 2021, the process of eliminating seniors like me, along with a few others, from the post-COVID camp began. Then I was made the captain of one of the three teams in the Bangladesh games.

“The captains of the other two teams were Joti [Nigar Sultana] and Sharmin Sultana. The pressure on seniors started from then on."

Responding to these allegations, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BC) has said that it has “complete trust and confidence in the women’s national team’s leadership, players and management" and has “found no evidence to support any of the claims made."

“It is deeply disappointing that an individual who currently has no involvement or relevance in the plans of Bangladesh cricket has chosen to make such misleading statements in public," the BCB said in a statement.

Sultana, one of the most senior players in the Bangladesh set-up, is the leading run-getter for Bangladesh with 2,162 runs, which includes nine fifties and a century. She is also just one of three women players from her country to notch up over 1,000 runs in ODIs.
