Shikhar Dhawan left disappointed by senior PBKS seamers’ wayward display

Between them, Sam Curran and Arshdeep Singh conceded 82 runs in 4.5 overs towards the back end for Punjab Kings

On the back of his side failing to defend 215 in Mohali, a visibly dejected Shikhar Dhawan couldn’t hold back his disappointment as he rued the waywardness of his senior pacers, whose listless showing handed the game on a platter to Mumbai Indians.

After being inserted into bat, Punjab posted what looked like an above-par 214, and looked poised to secure two points and jump to second spot on the table. Rishi Dhawan started off exceptionally, taking 1/3 off the first two overs, after which Nathan Ellis closed out the powerplay with the wicket of Cameron Green to reduce Mumbai to 54/2.

Punjab were in the drivers’ seat with eight overs to go, with Mumbai needing 100, but a 23-run over from Sam Curran tilted the game in the visitors’ favor. From thereon, between them, Arshdeep and Curran conceded an eye-watering 82 runs off 4.5 overs.

"We started off quite well and thought that was a very good total but unfortunately we could not defend it,” Dhawan said.

“I feel that, of course Rishi bowled really well, but from the other end, we bowled outside the off stump quite a bit and we should have bowled on off in the powerplay. And then Ishan and Surya just took the game away. We should have bowled tighter lines.”

Dhawan was all praise for Ellis, who finished with 2/34 off his 2, but was not impressed by the returns of Curran and Arshdeep.

“Because we saw the wicket and saw it's a very good wicket, we thought change of pace will work a lot and I feel Nathan bowled really well but other bowlers didn't step up today.”

A win would have taken Punjab to second, but they are now stuck in seventh spot. They next take on Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens on Monday, May 8th.
