Shoaib Bashir, who was the lucky charm for England at Lord’s as he got the tenth wicket in India’s second innings to lead his team to a famous 22-run win in the third Test of the five-match series on July 14 (Monday), has been ruled out of the rest of the series.
Playing with a broken finger because of a blow he suffered during India’s first innings, Bashir bowled only 5.5 overs in the second innings and picked the all-important wicket of Mohammed Siraj which clinched the match for England. In the first innings, the off-spinner bowled 14.5 overs and got the massive wicket of KL Rahul.
England will name Bashir’s replacement in a few days’ time as there is a nine-day gap between the end of the third Test and the beginning of the fourth at Old Trafford in Manchester.
Bashir has been a key figure in the first three Tests for the English team, bowling a total of 140.4 overs, which is the most by any bowler from both sides. Jack Leach looks like the best candidate to replace Bashir as the English veteran has picked up 32 wickets in nine games at an average of 26.50 in the County Championship this season, which is great for a spinner in these conditions.
