NEWSTom Prest, captain of the England Under 19 side, rued his side’s inability to make use of the toss advantage, and claimed that the Three Lions ought to have ‘batted better’ after winning the toss in Antigua.
England won the toss and batted in the final against India on Saturday but could only post 189 after being reduced to 61/6 inside the first hour.
Prest lauded the bowlers’ efforts with the ball, but admitted that his side lost the game with the bat.
“We would have liked to bat better after choosing to bat first,” Prest said after the game.
“But the was James Rew batted was outstanding, deserved a hundred. We definitely got the bowling and we did believe we could defend this. But they batted well.”
England, despite the low total, fought tooth and nail, and Prest said that he was proud of the way his team played. The England skipper also described the entire U19 World Cup as an unforgettable experience.
“Not only the cricket, but the media exposure we have got is something we will not forget. I have made a couple friends from other teams as well. Our parents and families have flown in to support us here. I am proud of the way the boys played.”
Winning skipper Yash Dhull, meanwhile, stated that his team winning the title was a proud moment for the whole nation.
“Proud moment for India, that we have managed to achieve this. It was difficult at the start to get the combination right. but as time went we became a family and the team atmosphere was good. Great moment to be playing under this lot of support staff,” Dhull said.
