‘Should have taken a 200-run lead’ - Silverwood rues missed chances with the bat

The England head coach, however, credited the Indian side for their bouncebackability

England head coach Chris Silverwood lauded India’s ability to constantly overturn tough situations and recover after being in the brink, but rued the inability of his side to bat the visitors out of the game.

Having bowled India out for 191 on the first day, England had a chance to take a giant lead in the first innings on a flat wicket, but their batsmen faltered. Valuable lower-order contributions eventually helped the Three Lions take a 99-run lead, but the inability to bat India out of the match came back to haunt the hosts as the Virat Kohli-led side posted 466 in the second attempt to turn the tables and storm to victory.

Speaking in the aftermath of the game, Silverwood reckoned that a lead anywhere around 190-200 would have piled serious pressure on the Indian side.

"If we're being truthful, I would like to have gone further past them at that point, that's going to be the opportunity to really put pressure on the Indians," Silverwood was quoted as saying by ESPNCrininfo.

"We failed to do that so it's something we'll reflect on in the dressing room and talk about amongst ourselves.

"It would have been great to go maybe 190 past them and really pile the pressure on, but again credit to the Indians, they know how to fight back," Silverwood added.

Earlier, England skipper Joe Root echoed the same sentiments and admitted that his side were not clinical with the bat. Lack of ruthlessness and failure to build partnerships, Root said, ultimately came back to haunt his side.

"Whenever you lose the game you can look at the toss. More than anything, you look at what lead we had and what we could have potentially had. That's the thing, we've got to be a bit more ruthless there, we've got to make that a 200-run lead instead of a 100-run lead, especially the way the surface was playing.

“It's about those big partnerships, we had a number of good starts, guys getting in and not managing to go on, that's something we've got to be clinical at, not get complacent."

The two teams have a three-day turnaround before the fifth and final Test at Old Trafford, which will be played from September 10th.
