It was quite a memorable night for Shree Charani, who on her WT20I debut, finished with figures of 4/12, the second-best for an Indian bowler on debut. The left-arm spinner achieved that record during India’s first WT20I against England at Trent Bridge, Nottingham, on June 28 (Saturday).
After India posted 210/5, courtesy of Smriti Mandhana’s record-setting century, it was one-way traffic as the Indian bowlers dominated the hosts. While the left-arm spinner bowled one over in the powerplay, it was after the powerplay phase that she showed her complete skillset.
The 20-year-old dismissed the hard-hitting Alice Capsey for her first T20I wicket, tossing the ball outside the off-stump. She later returned to remove Sophie Ecclestone, Nat Sciver-Brunt and ultimately ended the proceedings with Lauren Bell’s wicket.
4/9 - Sravanthi Naidu vs BAN, Cox's Bazaar, 2014
4/12 - N Shree Charani vs ENG, Nottingham, 2025*
3/21 - Poonam Yadav vs BAN, Vadodara, 2013
3/23 - Soniya Dabir vs ENG, Mumbai, 2010
3/24 - Rajeshwari Gayakwad vs SL, Vizianagaram, 2014
Not only was Bell’s wicket her fourth of the night, but she also narrowly missed out on setting an Indian women’s record. The left-arm spinner finished with figures of 4/12, the second-best figures for an Indian women’s player on T20I debut, only behind Sravanthi Naidu’s 4/9, which came against Bangladesh in Cox’s Bazaar back in 2014.
Courtesy of Charani’s 4/12, India won the clash by 97 runs, their fourth-biggest victory in the format in terms of runs.
