Vice captain of the Indian ODI team, Shreyas Iyer, even after recovering from the injury that forced him to be hospitalised in Australia, remains doubtful for 50-over matches against South Africa at home.
Reports in the media suggest that Iyer, who got injured during the third and final ODI of the three-match series in Australia, is not yet 100 per cent in terms of match fitness.
Iyer was attempting a catch when he landed flat on the ball in Sydney and apparently suffered spleen laceration, an injury that caused internal bleeding and required an emergency medical procedure.
“Iyer, who returned home from Australia recently, is still recovering from the injury he suffered and needs more time to be fit to play international cricket.
“The selection committee has been informed about Iyer’s status and, as per medical reports, needs nearly more than a month to be match fit,” Indian Express wrote in a report on November 11 (Tuesday).
Earlier on November 10 (Monday), Iyer posted a story on his social media accounts, writing, "Sun's been great therapy. Grateful to be back, Thanks for all the love and care.”
It seemed like he was on his way back to get back into the team, but the new development means that to see Iyer back in India colours, one would have to wait at least till January 11, when India will play the first ODI of their three-match series at home against New Zealand.
