Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders and now Punjab Kings (PBKS) — Shreyas Iyer has led all three teams into Qualifier 1 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) after PBKS defeated Mumbai Indians by seven wickets in Jaipur to reach the top of the points table at the end of their league stage games. No other captain in IPL history has accomplished this feat.
Batting first after losing the toss, Mumbai Indians scored 184/7 courtesy of a splendid half-century from Suryakumar Yadav. However, PBKS bowlers did better to hold them to that total, because the pitch was really good to bat on, and their batters proved it in the second innings when they chased down the target with ease.
The partnership between swashbuckling opener Priyansh Arya and new number three Josh Inglis lasted for 59 deliveries as they scored 109 runs together. It was a decisive phase for PBKS, as it ensured that a 26* off 16 from Iyer was enough for them to chase down the target with nine deliveries remaining.
This win allowed the Punjab side to end on 19 points and top the points table. With just one more league game left, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) will have to win their game against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) tomorrow by a decent margin to usurp the top spot from PBKS.
