Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer confirmed that he has sustained a finger injury, and revealed that he is currently unsure about the seriousness of the injury, which will have to be evaluated.
Iyer batted at No.5 today, at least one spot below his usual No.4 slot for the side. He then subbed himself out during the halfway point of the match, with Harpreet Brar coming in as the impact substitute. Iyer is believed to have sustained the finger injury during training before the Rajasthan Royals (RR) clash.
“Finger injury is the reason [for me being subbed out by Punjab],” Iyer said after the game.
“Yesterday while practising I got hit, I will have to go and check what is the issue here.”
In Iyer’s absence, it was Shashank Singh who led Punjab Kings in the second innings. RR got off to an absolute flyer as they racked up 89 in the powerplay, but PBKS bounced back admirably with the ball, eventually registering a 10-run win to go second on the points table.
Iyer lauded the fighting spirit shown by the team after suffering an early setback.
“I was just passing on the message to all the players to keep a positive body language, you tend to drop and feel the game has gone away from you, but I am proud of every player out there to show that sort of great and bold approach,” he said.
The game was turned on its head by none other than Harpreet Brar, who took three huge wickets for Punjab, dismissing all of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Vaibhav Suryavanshi and Riyan Parag.
Iyer showered praise on the returning Brar, who has not had too many opportunities to influence games this season.
“He has been consistent in the nets. He wants to do the best for himself, he was hungry for this opportunity and today I feel he stepped in and delivered at his best, congratulations to him and his mindset has been tremendous throughout,” Iyer said of Brar, who was named Player of the Match for his efforts.
With the win, Punjab moved to second in the table. A Gujarat Titans (GT) win against Delhi Capitals (DC) will seal their spot in the playoffs.
