Shreyas Iyer could be the next big thing in Indian cricket: Sunil Gavaskar

The India batter was adjudged the player of the match for his twin fifties in the second Test against Sri Lanka

Shreyas Iyer has been in the form of his life. He struck twin fifties in Bengaluru in the second Test against Sri Lanka and walked away with the player of the match award.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar reckons Shreyas is the next big thing in Indian cricket.

"Because anybody who plays the way he did...it is very attractive batting that he has, the shots that he has," Gavaskar said on Star Sports.

"He is a good looking young man. So it all points to the fact that in the next six-eight months he could be the next big thing in Indian cricket."

Shreyas was slotted in at no. 5 for this series in place of Ajinkya Rahane, who was overlooked for the two matches. “I have always dreamt about playing Test cricket for India, good feeling to come and contribute, want to keep this going,” he said in the post-match presentation.

India do not play any Test this year, barring the one-off Test against England in July. Their attention now turns to the Indian Premier League (IPL), starting end of the month and then the T20 World Cup, scheduled to be played in October-November in Australia.
