India batter Shreyas Iyer was injured during the third One-Day International (ODI) against Australia in Sydney on October 25 (Saturday). He fell awkwardly on his ribs while taking the catch of Alex Carey in the 34th over of the match. He walked off the field immediately and never returned.
His services with the bat was not required, as Rohit Sharma (121*) and Virat Kohli (74*) put on 168 for the second wicket to take their team home. Two days after the incident, the BCCI has finally provided an update, which says that Iyer sustained a "laceration injury to the spleen" and is still admitted in a hospital in Sydney.
"Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation," the BCCI media release said.
"Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."
The 30-year-old is not part of the T20 International (T20I) squad against Australia. The five-match series will get underway from October 29 (Wednesday) onwards. In his two innings in the ODIs, Iyer managed 11 and 61. Overall, he has scored 2,917 runs at 47.81 in the 50-over format for India at a strike rate of 99.
