Shreyas Iyer Might Be Left Out Of India ‘A’ Squad For England: Reports

Iyer, whose last Test came at home against England in 2024, averages 90 across his last 5 first-class innings

The BCCI are expected to announce the India ‘A’ squad for the unofficial Test series against England Lions — which will be played before the start of the five-Test series — in the next couple of days, and early reports suggest that Shreyas Iyer is not a guarantee to make it to the ‘A’ squad.

Iyer, whose last Test came at home against England in 2024, averages 90 across his last 5 first-class innings but, according to Cricbuzz, the 30-year-old is not a lock in the squad for the three unofficial Tests.

“Shreyas Iyer is not a surefire selection. He is currently not in the scheme of things of the selectors for India A or India squads. But there is a chance that preference or non-preference may change depending on whether Virat Kohli relents and agrees to be part of the squad. Iyer, with 14 Tests under his belt, has not played a Test for more than 15 months,” the Cricbuzz report read.

Iyer averages 36.86 in the 14 Tests he’s played but averages just 15.00 across 6 innings in SENA countries. He has played one Test in England to date, back in 2022, and there he registered scores of 15 & 19 batting at No.6.

Should Iyer get left out of the ‘A’ squad, it might be a very clear indication that the selectors see him as a white-ball specialist. At the same time, should he be picked, it will be a golden opportunity for him to push his case to get back in the Test side again. In the Border-Gavaskar Trophy last year, India rewarded batters who impressed in the shadow tour, with both Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal getting opportunities in the main series.
