Shreyas Iyer Named Captain For Australia ‘A’ ODIs As BCCI Confirm Red-ball Break

Iyer has taken a break from red-ball cricket due to a back issue that's resurfaced

The BCCI have confirmed that Shreyas Iyer has officially requested a break from red-ball cricket, and have appointed the 30-year-old captain for the three unofficial ODIs against Australia ‘A’.

In a press release, the BCCI confirmed that Iyer’s decision to take a break from red-ball cricket was to manage his fitness, with his back recently starting to trouble him again.

“Mr Shreyas Iyer has informed the BCCI of his decision to take a six-month break from red-ball cricket. Having undergone back surgery in the UK and managed his recovery well, he has recently experienced recurring back spasms and stiffness while playing the longer format,” BCCI said in a statement.

“He wishes to utilise this period to build endurance, body resilience and work on his fitness. In view of his decision, he was not considered for selection for the Irani Cup.”

In the squad for the Australia A ODIs initially announced by the BCCI on September 14, Rajat Patidar was named captain, but Patidar will now be leading Rest of India in the Irani Cup. The RCB captain is coming fresh off leading Central Zone to the Duleep Trophy 2025 title.

The Rest of India squad also features other India Test hopefuls such as Abhimanyu Easwaran, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Tanush Kotian.

The Irani Cup will be played from October 1 to 5 in Nagpur, between ROI and Vidarbha.
