Shreyas Iyer out of Asia Cup 2023 clash against Sri Lanka

The BCCI revealed that the batter is yet to recover from a back spasm that kept him out of the Pakistan clash

India batter Shreyas Iyer will not feature in the Asia Cup 2023 Super Fours clash against Sri Lanka as he is yet to recover from back spasms, the BCCI has confirmed. Iyer was slotted to play ahead of KL Rahul against Pakistan, but India were forced to make a last-minute change. Rahul returned to international cricket and slammed a memorable 111* as India went on to crush Pakistan by 228 runs in Colombo on Monday (September 11).

"And then KL, to get back from injury and then to know five minutes before the toss he's playing, to play that way shows the mindset of the player," India captain Rohit Sharma said at the post-match presentation.

Iyer is part of India's squad for the 2023 ODI World Cup and returned after a long injury lay-off that included back surgery. He was set to occupy the No. 4 spot for India, but as things stand, Rahul will continue to play there until the Mumbai batter is deemed fit.

"Shreyas Iyer is feeling better but is yet to fully recover from back spasm. He has been advised rest by the BCCI Medical Team and has not travelled with the team to the stadium today for India's Super 4 match against Sri Lanka," the BCCI said in a statement.

Iyer was part of the XI in the group stage match against Pakistan and then against Nepal. He made a nine-ball 14 against Pakistan but did not get a chance to bat agianst Nepal, as India went on to win the game by 10 wickets.

Overall, Iyer has played 44 ODIs for India, slamming 1,645 runs at 45.69 to go with a strike-rate of nearly 97. Most of these runs (819) have come while he has batted at No. 4 - a position where he has slammed seven of his 16 50-plus scores in the format.
