The first red-ball clash between India A and Australia A in Lucknow has turned into a run fest, with almost every batter cashing in. But Shreyas Iyer failed to make an impact, dismissed for just 8 off 13 balls on day three, September 18 (Thursday).
Walking in at No.5 with India A cruising at 213/3 in reply to Australia’s mammoth 532/6 (decl), the Mumbai batter struck a single boundary before falling to offspinner Corey Rocchiccioli. He was the only batter in India A’s top five not to cross 30.
Iyer, who was not considered for both the Asia Cup and the recent five-Test series in England, was entrusted with the India A captaincy for this two-match series.
This is his third consecutive failure in red-ball cricket. Earlier in the Duleep Trophy 2025, playing for West Zone, Iyer managed scores of just 25 and 12 against Central Zone, dismissed by left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed and off-spinner Saransh Jain in the two innings.
This dip comes despite a strong Ranji Trophy campaign last season, where he piled up 480 runs in just seven innings at an average of 68.57 and a strike rate of 90.2.
His last Test appearance came in February 2024, but with India set to host West Indies and South Africa for two-Test series each in October and November, the selectors will be watching closely. For Iyer, big runs in the remaining innings against Australia A could be crucial to force his way back into the senior side.
