Six Sri Lanka women's team players test positive for covid-19

It is yet unclear if they have been infected by the Omnicron variant

Six of Sri Lanka's women's team in Zimbabwe tested positive for covid-19 on Monday, a Cricket Sri Lanka official told ESPNCricinfo.

The team had travelled for the ICC Women's ODI World Cup qualifier but the emergence of a new Omnicore variant in South Africa led to the ICC cancelling the tournament.

The decision was taken after Saturday's match between Sri Lanka and West Indies was called off after one of Sri Lanka's support staff tested positive.

"The team is still in Zimbabwe, and we're talking with the ICC to try and get them back to Sri Lanka as soon as possible," SLC CEO Ashley de Silva told ESPNcricinfo.

"The players who have tested positive will have to stay there until they test negative. There is a doctor traveling with the team who will stay behind with them."

Following the cancellation of the tournament, Bangladesh, Pakistan and the West Indies have qualified for the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand by virtue of their rankings.
