Size Doesn’t Matter: Gavaskar Brings in Sarfaraz To Support Rohit On Overweight Issue
Rohit was criticised for being overweight and looking unimpressive
Ever since Indian captain Rohit Sharma was trolled on the internet for being overweight during the India-New Zealand match in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, he has been receiving support from all quarters. The latest entrant to the list of supporters is former India captain and ace commentator Sunil Gavaskar.
"I have always said, if you want only slim guys, then you should go to a modelling competition and pick all the models. It's not about that," Gavaskar was quoted as saying to India Today.
Giving the example of Sarfaraz Khan, who played for India in the last home season, the Indian legend said, "It's about how well you can play cricket. We talked about Sarfaraz Khan — he was vilified for a long time because he was on the heavier side. But if he scores 150 for India in a Test match and follows it up with another two or three fifty-plus scores, then what's the issue?"
Rohit, who was first made India’s full-time all-format captain in 2022, has led the team to a T20 World Cup title in 2024 and to the final of the ODI World Cup in 2023. In the Champions Trophy, India have already made it to the last four.
Supporting mental strength over superficial toned bodies, Gavaskar backed Rohit, saying, "I don't think size has anything to do with it. It's your mental strength — whether you can last the distance — that's the most important thing. Bat well, bat for long, and score runs."
