Smriti Mandhana is not having a World Cup to remember, with her being unable to continue the dream ODI run that she had until the tournament began. However, despite not looking at her best and getting out for 23 off 32 deliveries against South Africa in Vizag, she surpassed the former Australian great Belinda Clark’s 28-year-old record for most runs in women's ODIs in a calendar year.
Mandhana has now amassed 982 runs this year at an average of 57.76 with four centuries and three fifties already. She also has the highest score of 135 this year.
However, the record might not bring a lot of happiness to Mandhana as she’s suffering a poor run of form in the home ODI World Cup so far. She has failed to give the starts she’s known for, which brings pressure on her opening partner, Pratika Rawal and number three batter Harleen Deol.
This has eventually led to an inevitable slowdown after the power play for India, where their run rate comes down, which allows the opposition to roar back in the game. South Africa did exactly that today, and dismissed both openers, Deol and Jemimah Rodrigues, between the 11th and 21st over while conceding only 36 runs in that period.
