Smriti Mandhana skips WBBL to prioritise domestic cricket

With both tournaments overlapping, Madhana did not include herself in the WBBL overseas draft

After winning The Women’s Hundred with Southern Braves, there were wide expectations that Smriti Mandhana could be eyeing a Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) title later this year. However, the Indian vice-captain has opted to skip the upcoming season of the WBBL and instead has set her sights on the domestic season.

With there being an overlap between the Indian domestic season (which will run from October 19 to January 26) and the WBBL, Mandhana has her priorities clear. Not just that, the upcoming WBBL season will also clash with the Indian international calendar, given India are set to host South Africa and New Zealand and then England and Australia later in the year.

India women’s domestic season will kick-off with the Senior Women's T20 Trophy, which will run from October 19 to November 9, followed by the Senior Women's Inter-Zonal Trophy from November 24. Senior Women's One-Day Trophy will be the penultimate fixture in the domestic season from January 4 to 26.

Mandhana has been a regular fixture at the WBBL, where she has donned the jerseys of three franchises - Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes and Sydney Thunder. It will be the second straight WBBL season that the southpaw has missed.
