Mohammed Shami, despite being in amazing form, has been ignored by the selection committee of India’s men’s cricket team. He was not selected for the Australia tour, nor for the home Tests against the West Indies.
Despite being ignored continuously, Shami has continued to perform well, and he picked up 15 wickets in his first two Ranji Trophy appearances, before going wicketless against Tripura and deciding not to play against Railways, to give his body a much-needed rest.
Former India captain and current Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Sourav Ganguly, has advocated that Shami, being at his best in the Ranji Trophy, should be utilised at the international level in all formats.
“Shami is bowling exceptionally well. He is fit, and we saw in the three (two) Ranji Trophy matches, where he’s won Bengal on his own,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by Indian Express.
“I’m sure the selectors are watching and there is a communication between Mohammad Shami and the selectors. But if you ask me, in terms of fitness and skill, it’s the Mohammad Shami we know of,” he added.
Ganguly was also vocal in his support for the pacer to not only play Tests and ODIs, but all formats, despite him enduring one of his worst seasons of the IPL in its 2025 edition.
“I really don’t see any reason why he can’t keep playing Test matches, One-day cricket and T20 cricket for India. Because that skill is enormous,” said the 53-year-old.
Shami last played for India in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. In Tests, his last appearance was in the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023. In T20Is, he last played against England in February 2025.
