South Africa’s Bangladesh tour dependent on CSA’s security assessment: Reports

South Africa are not likely to leave it to the choice of individual players on whether they want to tour the company that saw nationwide civil unrest only a few months ago

Cricket South Africa (CSA) is deliberating whether to become the first international side to tour Bangladesh after a bloody civil unrest led by student protests in the South Asian nation that saw their prime minister forced to flee the country. This forced the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift the Women's T20 World Cup 2024 out of Bangladesh to the UAE. The tournament was scheduled to be held in Bangladesh from October 3 onwards.

The decision on the two-test tour, which is scheduled to begin on October 21 according to ICC's Futures Tour Program (FTP), will be based on the security reports assessment, which, if reports by ESPNcricinfo are to be believed, is likely to be completed by September 14.

The CSA is in discussion with the South African Cricketers' Association (SACA) and will arrive at a collective conclusion, meaning that the board is unlikely to let individual players decide for themselves if they want to tour.

“CSA sources said that the information they have is that the situation in Bangladesh has settled and that South Africa are hopeful they will be able to tour,” ESPNcricinfo said in its report on Monday (September 9).

The two-match series is part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle. South Africa are already languishing in seventh position in the points table having lost three matches, won two and drawn one of their first six games.

In their last six games, they are scheduled to play Bangladesh (away) and Pakistan and Sri Lanka at home. They must win at least five of those games to have a crack at reaching the WTC final.
