Sri Lanka Cricket announces a Women’s National Super League (NSL)

The tournament is similar to the Men’s NSL which was launched in 2022

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) released a press statement announcing the Women’s National Super League (WNSL) launch. The tournament will be played in both One-day and T20 formats, with the 50-over tournament beginning tomorrow, i.e. February 6.

The four teams - Colombo, Candy, Dambulla and Galle - will have 60 players in total, with 15 players each. The matches will be played in Colombo.

SLC’s press release called this step a “major elevation for women’s cricket in the country, as they get to compete in the country’s Elite Domestic Competition.”

This would help SLC to not only identify talented women from different clubs and teams but also manage their careers and help them grow through the ranks. The T20 competition of WNSL will also happen in February, right after the 50-over tournament.

This is also a welcome step, considering that the Sri Lankan women have had a great time in the recent past despite not playing a lot of games. Skipper Chamari Athapaththu was named the ICC ODI Player of the Year (2023).

Then, the team had a historic ODI series win against New Zealand at home and then topped it by winning a T20 series against England in England.
