NEWSSri Lanka has shown interest to host the remainder of the suspended Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season, according to a report by ESPNCricinfo.
Last year, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) offered its stadia to host the tournament amidst the nation-wide lockdown in India, but the BCCI chose UAE as its back-up venue. Earlier in the week, English counties MCC, Surrey, Warwickshire, and Lancashire have offered to host the tournament in England.
It is unclear whether SLC has officially made an offer to the BCCI, the chairperson of SLC's management committee (which administers cricket in Sri Lanka at present), Professor Arjuna de Silva, has expressed keenness to have the rest of the IPL played in Sri Lanka in September.
The island has four floodlit venues that may suit the IPL, in Colombo, Pallekele, Sooriyawewa and Dambulla. The venue at Sooriyawewa had hosted the five-team Lanka Premier League in October and November last year.
However, the rising number of COVID-19 cases could be a concern as the island has been recording over 2000 daily cases since the beginning of May.
