Cricket Hong Kong, China, announced former Sri Lankan wicketkeeper batter Kaushal Silva as their new head coach on July 28 (Monday). The 39-year-old, who played 39 Tests and scored three centuries in his seven-year-long career, will start his job next month.
Silva has been working in Australia post-retirement, where he’s been part of the Superkings Academy. However, he has now been roped in to replace Simon Willis at Hong Kong, after the Asian side has found themselves in a turmoil situation, after losing three consecutive games to Malaysia.
“Hong Kong Cricket has a lot of potential, and I am eager to contribute to the team’s growth and success on the international stage,” Silva said, reported South China Morning Post. “My focus will be on instilling a strong work ethic and a winning mentality amongst the senior squad and working to identify and nurture fresh talent for continued growth.”
“His expertise will be instrumental as we strive to enhance our recent performances and work towards achieving our long-term objectives,” Burji Shroff, chairman of Cricket Hong Kong, China, said. “We believe that under his guidance we can, not only elevate our competitive standing, but also promote the sport within our community.”
Hong Kong are drawn in Group B alongside Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the upcoming Asia Cup. It will be Silva’s first assignment and possibly the biggest test in his early career as Hong Kong’s head coach.
