Young Sri Lankan star Praveen Jayawickrama has been banned by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for one year after the left-arm spinner admitted to breaching the ICC Anti-Corruption Code.
On August 8th, the ICC charged Jayawickrama with three separate offences (under Article 2.4.7 and Article 2.4.4) and gave the 26-year-old two weeks to respond to the charges.
Jayawickrama has now been banned for a year after admitting to being in breach of the following:
“Article 2.4.7 – Obstructing or delaying any investigation that may be carried out by the ACU, including concealing, tampering with or destroying any documentation or other information that may be relevant to that investigation and/or that may be evidence or may lead to the discovery of evidence of corrupt conduct under the Anti-Corruption Code.”
The good news for Jayawickrama is that, of the one year, the last six months of his sentence are suspended, meaning that he can return to action after six months provided the ICC is satisfied with his behaviour.
“The charges relate to international cricket and the Lanka Premier League. The ICC, in agreement with Sri Lanka Cricket, acted in accordance with Articles 1.7.4.1 and 1.8.1 of the Code,” the ICC added in its release.
Jayawickrama made his international debut in 2021 and came to the limelight for picking up a 11-wicket haul on Test debut against Bangladesh. His last appearance in international cricket, however, came back in June 2022.
He has not played any professional cricket since being charged by the ICC in August.
