17-Year-Old Mumbai SENSATION Mhatre Joins CSK As Gaikwad's Replacement

Ayush Mhatre, just 17, will replace CSK’s injured skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad in the squad

Ayush Mhatre, the 17-year-old opening batter from Mumbai, is set to replace Ruturaj Gaikwad at Chennai Super Kings for the remainder of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season.

The decision was taken after Gaikwad was ruled out of the tournament due to a fractured elbow. The youngster will join the CSK squad ahead of their away match against Mumbai Indians on April 20.

Mhatre was earlier called for a trial in Chennai, along with a few other domestic cricketers, and the team management is believed to have picked the 17-year-old Mhatre for his aggressive batting and also the fact that he had an impressive domestic season.

The 17-year-old right-handed batter made his domestic debut in the Irani Trophy last October.

He became the youngest batter to score 150-plus runs in List A cricket (181 off 117 balls against Nagaland). He also scored a half-century on Ranji Trophy debut, hitting 52 off 71 balls against Baroda.

Meanwhile, CSK would hope that Mhatre’s inclusion brings a change in fortune for the multiple title winners. They got off to a good start by defeating their biggest rivals Mumbai Indians. However, things changed dramatically last weekend, when they lost to RCB and RR in the space of three days. CSK are currently 10th on the points table, having won one of their six matches.

CSK will next play LSG in Lucknow on April 14.
