Stats: England post highest List-A total after Buttler logged the 2nd fastest 150 in ODIs

Here are a few noteworthy stats from the first ODI between Netherlands and England in Amstelveen

It was a run fest in Amstelveen in the first innings. From the toss till the 2nd over, this was the only period of joy for the hosts. After being put to bat, England batters made merry and broke numerous records:

Highest ever total in List-A

The World Champions England, suffered an early loss as Jason Roy departed in the second over (1.3). But, Philip Salt and Dawid Malan joined hands to stitch a 222-run partnership for the second wicket. Later on, it was all Jos Buttler and Liam Livingstone's show.

In the final over of England’s innings, in the third ball, Buttler launched a six over mid-wicket to record the highest total in ODIs. Livingstone in the last two balls, extended the total to 498/4 with a four and a six of the last two balls. By the end of the innings, England not only had the highest ODI total, but also, the highest List-A total. Interestingly, in ODIs, the top three highest totals belong to England.

The unstoppable Buttler

The past couple of months have been extremely fruitful for Buttler. Following his four centuries in the 2022 edition of the IPL, Buttler started off England’s limited over run with yet another blazing century.

In his knock of an unbeaten 162 off 7 balls, Buttler set many records. Starting off, Buttler reached his century in just 47 balls, which is the second fastest ton by an England batter in ODIs. Co-incidentally, the top three in this list for England are all Buttler. In fact, he is the only batter in all ODIs to have registered a century in 50 or less balls thrice.

The Buttler mayhem doesn’t stop there. He went on to register his second score of 150+ in ODIs in just 65 balls. In ODIs, only AB de Villiers against West Indies in 2015 World Cup, had achieved this quicker (64 balls).

Livingstone doing what he does best

When Livingstone came to bat, 32 balls were left in England’s innings after Malan and Eoin Morgan’s dismissal in back-to-back deliveries. As witnessed in the 2022 edition of IPL and before, Livingstone didn’t take time to get off the blocks.

In the 46th over, he smashed 32 runs against Philippe Boissevain. After facing 13 balls, Livingstone was batting on 46 and had the chance of breaking AB de Villiers record for the fastest half-century in ODIs. However, he fell short of it and registered a 17-ball half-century, the joint-second best in ODIs.

The boundaries weren’t big enough

In the first 35 overs of England’s innings, only nine sixes were hit and 22 fours. Out of the nine, four were hit by Buttler. However, it was in the last 15 overs where the tables turned.

In overs between 36-50, England hit 17 sixes, 10 from the bat of Buttler, six from Livingstone and one from Malan. Overall, they hit 26 sixes in the innings, which is the most by a team in an innings in ODIs. Again, the top three spots are occupied by England in this list as well.

In total, England scored 300 runs via boundaries (36 fours and 26 sixes). By virtue of it, they became the first team to score 300+ runs only in boundaries in an innings in ODIs.

Three batters scoring 100

Despite the early loss of Roy, Malan and Salt weren’t bogged down. The pair forged a 222-run partnership for the second wicket and both the batters registered a century. After the dismissal of Salt, Buttler joined the party with another century, making it three in the innings.

In ODIs, only twice had an innings seen three centuries, and both were from South Africa. Against West Indies in 2015 in Johannesburg and against India in the same year at Wankhede, South Africa had three centuries. Today, England became the second team to achieve this feat.

Livingstone smashes the most runs in an over for England

In the 46th over, Livingstone clubbed 32 runs against Boissevain. His assault included four sixes and two fours. This is now the most runs scored by England in a single over of an ODI. Previously, Dimitri Mascarenhas against Yuvraj Singh in 2007 at The Oval, had smashed five sixes off the last over, taking the tally to 30 runs in that over.
