India suffered one of their narrowest Test losses in history at Lord’s in the third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, as England defeated them by 22 runs. It was the second narrowest away loss (in runs), and the fourth overall in Test cricket for India.
Chasing 193, India’s top order failed to live up to their promise, and the visitors were seven down for just 82 runs. That’s when Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj batted for 318 deliveries and showed supreme resilience to deny England a chance at victory. The pitch was tough to score on, and since saving wickets was the main goal, India’s run-rate fell down to a trickle.
They batted well past Tea on Day five to try and eke out a miraculous win; however, Siraj got bowled by Shoaib Bashir in the most anticlimactic way to hand England a victory to remember. Earlier, both England and India had scored 387 in their first innings, reducing the Test to effectively a one-innings shoot-out, where India fell marginally short.
