Steven Smith, on January 29 (Wednesday), became the fourth Australian batter and 15th overall to complete 10000 runs in Test cricket. The right-hander achieved the milestone on day one of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
Ricky Ponting (13378), Allan Border (11174) and Steve Waugh (10927) are the other three Australians with more than 10000 runs in Test cricket.
Smith (205) is also fifth-quickest to the landmark in terms of innings after Brian Lara (195), Sachin Tendulkar (195), Kumar Sangakkara (195) and Ponting (196). In terms of matches, Smith (115) is only behind West Indies' Lara (111).
Smith, who got out for 4 in the final innings of the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, needed just one run to get to the 10000-run mark and got there with a single off Prabath Jayasuriya’s bowling.
He walked out to bat with Australia's score reading 135/2 in 30 overs and it took him just one ball to hit the milestone.
Amongst batters with at least 10000 runs in Test cricket, Sangakkara (57.40), Jacques Kallis (55.37) and Smith are the only ones with an average of more than 55.
