Australia batter Steven Smith has received the all-clear to join the Australian squad for a camp ahead of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka, starting January 29, Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed.
Smith, who will lead Australia in Pat Cummins' absence, had injured his elbow during the Big Bash League (BBL) while throwing the ball from the outfield. He has previously had his share of elbow injuries and, in fact, underwent surgery in 2019. It has delayed his departure in Dubai as he stayed behind to consult a specialist but was given the green signal on January 20 (Monday).
"Smith is expected to return to batting later in the week to begin his preparation for the first Test against Sri Lanka," a CA statement said
However, things are not looking good for spinner Matthew Kuhnemann, who had to undergo surgery on his right thumb after injuring himself while trying to field a ball off his own bowling. However, CA remains hopeful of him playing a role in the Test series against Sri Lanka.
"He will remain in Australia while the surgical wound heals further," CA said.
"He is planned to resume bowling this week with a view to joining the squad in Sri Lanka if he continues to progress well."
The two Tests, part of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2023-25 cycle, will be played in Galle. The first Test will be played on January 29, followed by the second game on February 6.
