Tamim announces retirement, Litton set to lead

The ODI skipper draws curtains to a 16-year-old glittering career three months prior to the World Cup

In a shocking development after Bangladesh's loss to Afghanistan in the first ODI, Tamim Iqbal has announced his retirement from all formats of international cricket.

The southpaw missed the one-off Test against Afghanistan last month owing to a back injury but featured in the opening ODI at Chattogram despite not being fit.

The ODI skipper was highly emotional as he addressed the press conference in Chattogram on Thursday, July 6, to announce his decision to step away from the game.

"This is the end for me. I have given my best. I have tried my best. I am retiring from international cricket from this moment. I want to thank all my teammates, coaches, BCB officials, my family members, and those who have been with me through my long journey," he said.

"They kept faith in me. I also want to thank the fans. Your love and faith in me inspired me to give my very best for Bangladesh. I want to ask for your prayers for the next chapter of my life. Please keep me in your prayers."

The 34-year-old retired from the shortest format last year and was touted to lead the national side in the upcoming ODI World Cup scheduled to take place later in India.

While the reason for his sudden decision is unknown, there were concerns surrounding his back injury that might have led to the abrupt ending of a glorious career.

After making his debut in February 2007, Tamim has been the backbone of Bangladesh's batting unit, amassing 8313 runs in 239 innings, which is the most by any batter representing the national side.

According to the latest reports, veteran player Litton Das is expected to lead the side after Tamim's retirement. Litton's first assignment would be to overturn a 0-1 scoreline against Afghanistan.

The Tigers will lock horns against Afghanistan in the second ODI on Saturday, July 8, at the same venue.
