A question mark was added over the fitness of Australian express pacer Tayla Vlaeminck after she dislocated her shoulder while fielding at the boundary against Pakistan in Dubai in the ongoing ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
The unfortunate incident happened on the fourth ball of the match itself when she ran to the boundary to stop an edge from Muneeba Ali’s bat from reaching the boundary. While running back and sliding to stop the ball, Vlaeminck’s knee got stuck in the turf first and she landed awkwardly on her shoulder. She tumbled across the boundary and lay on the ground in agony as the medical support staff of the Australian team surrounded her.
An update from the Aussie camp on Vlaeminck said that, “Tayla dislocated her right shoulder while attempting to stop a boundary. Her shoulder is now relocated and the extent of the injury will be known following further assessment over the coming days.”
Vlaeminck, known for her high-pace bowling, was part of Australia’s T20 World Cup winning squad in 2018. However, since then, she has suffered a range of unfortunate injuries that have derailed her career. She was included in Australia’s squad for this tournament to add extra impact with her pace, as she’s amongst the quickest pacers in the world.
Vlaeminck, who’s still just 25, has already dislocated her left shoulder twice — once in 2017-18, and then in the last Women’s Ashes, after which she had to get surgery done for rehabilitation.
Before that, she had already suffered two ACL reconstructions, a foot stress fracture that made her miss the 2020 T20 World Cup at home, and then the ODI World Cup in 2022, including the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and the 2023 T20 World Cup.
