South Africa captain Temba Bavuma injured his elbow just a couple of months before the World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at Lord's. According to ESPNCricinfo, Bavuma was due to join the Lions squad for the CSA domestic final on April 8 (Tuesday) but did not arrive in Johannesburg ahead of the game. It is understood Bavuma has suffered a niggle. However, it remains unclear as to which elbow he has injured this time.
Bavuma missed a lot of cricket due to an injured left elbow, which he first fractured in 2022, which saw him sidelined for three months. He further aggravated it when he dove awkwardly while completing a run against Ireland in Abu Dhabi and, as a result, missed South Africa's Tests against Bangladesh.
Moreover, he also had injuries to both his hamstrings, further preventing his return to action. When he did, he slammed two tons against Sri Lanka, which were part of his four continuous 50-plus scores. More recently, he led South Africa to a semi-final finish at the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Since then, he was present during the Lions' last game, which was washed out. He then travelled to Cape Town and was due to join his team ahead of the final.
South Africa are looking to play a Test in England ahead of the WTC final to acclimatise to the conditions, along with several practice matches. The WTC final between South Africa and Australia will be played at Lord's from June 11 onwards.
