It’s been four years since Sam Curran last played Test cricket for England, but a red-ball return might not be far away for the left-hander as he continues to dominate the County Championship with the bat in hand.
On day one of Surrey’s clash against Durham on June 29 (Sunday), Curran posted his second first-class ton, registering 108 off just 124 balls as Surrey ended the day on 407/3.
By doing so, the 27-year-old continued his remarkable run of form in red-ball cricket. He has now scored 797 runs across his last 14 first-class innings, averaging 56.92. What’s more, he’s been striking at over 80 in the process.
Predominantly batting at No.6 during this period, Curran now has a whopping nine 50-plus scores in his last 14 innings in first-class cricket. He has crossed 70 on seven occasions, although going on to convert it into three figures just twice.
Given he’s also taken 15 wickets at 28 during this period, a Test comeback might not be far away for the all-rounder. Though he now looks to be a proper top six batter, the space for Curran in England’s Test team might be at No.8, where he could be an alternative for someone like Chris Woakes.
