Ahead of the 2026 season of The Hundred, the franchise Northern Superchargers have been officially renamed as the Sunrisers Leeds, on November 4 (Tuesday). Earlier this year, the Indian media conglomerate Sun Group took over the Northern Superchargers for a sum of 100 million pounds.
Sun Group have 100% control over both the Northern Superchargers and the county cricket team of Yorkshire, as the media group have bought Yorkshire’s 49% stake as well. According to ESPNCricinfo, “the new owners have now filed documents to Companies House in the UK, which confirm that the Superchargers name will be discontinued.”
It is on expected lines, as the other two franchises owned by the Sun Group are named Sunrisers Hyderabad (IPL) and Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SA20). Apart from Sunrisers Leeds, the Manchester Originals are set to be renamed as Manchester Super Giants, and Oval Invincibles are going to be called MI London.
"The deal puts the club in a strong financial position, which has been far from the case for many years here, and we can start looking towards a very bright future," Sanjay Patel, Yorkshire's chief executive, said of the sale, reported ESPNCricinfo.
Unlike previous editions, The Hundred 2026 will feature an IPL-style auction system, starkly different from the draft system.
