The Indian Test team is going through a lean period after losing the home Test series to New Zealand 0-3, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia 1-3, and now have lost the first Test against England in the ongoing five-Test series.
It’s natural that questions will be raised on Gautam Gambhir and his coaching as India were one of the top sides in the World Test Championship cycle, but failed to qualify for the final after he took over. Cricket expert, broadcaster, and Gambhir’s former Delhi teammate Aakash Chopra feels that the Indian coach would be under a lot of pressure to perform.
“There is a lot of pressure on Gautam Gambhir. The pressure is absolutely mounting. If you look at his performances in Test cricket, you will find that he has not won a lot of matches,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Chopra recounted the losses under Gambhir and said that if India end up losing the England Test series as well, the former Indian opener will be openly criticised and questioned after being given the team he wanted and yet not being able to perform.
“He won two matches against Bangladesh and one against Australia. However, he lost three against New Zealand, three against Australia and one against England. He has been continuously losing.
If the England series doesn’t go too well, then there will be a question mark – where are they going and what are they doing?
“Because the selectors will feel that whatever team management is asking for, it is being given. The type of player you want, the number of players you want, and the player you are pointing at are being given. So, if that is the case, you need to deliver the results. Period. There are no excuses,” Chopra said.
The second Test against England will begin on July 2 at Edgbaston.
