After losing to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by six wickets in Match 61 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) became the fifth team to get knocked out of the race for the playoffs. LSG failed to defend 205 on May 19 (Monday), and skipper Rishabh Pant said their season could have been different if there hadn't been so many injuries.
Left-arm seamer Mohsin Khan was ruled out before the season, while Mayank Yadav featured just twice before suffering another injury. Lucknow won four of their first six games but managed only one victory in their next six matches. They have two more games remaining, but they can maximum get to 14 points, which won’t be enough to qualify for the playoffs.
“We knew we had gaps to fill because of injuries. As a team, we had decided not to talk about it. But it became difficult to close the gaps. The way we planned the auction, if we would have had the same bowling, the story would have been different. Sometimes things go your way, sometimes they don't,” said Pant, who himself is averaging just 12.27 this season.
“We take pride in the way we played and will look at the positives. We have a strong batting firepower. Even for bowlers, there were times when they were bowling in good areas. We were trying to make the best of it,” said Pant before praising Digvesh Singh Rathi. “The bowler Rathi has come up nicely. This is his first season. The way he bowled, it was good to see. He is one of the positives."
LSG will next play Gujarat Titans (GT) on May 22 before finishing their season with a game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on May 27.
